I was thinking that this might be best in the Coin Photography forum, but that forum is mainly instructional. Can I please get feedback on which photo of this 1881 S Morgan (MS64) is most appealing? 03 O5 Edited by TonysPics 05/12/2009 5:12 pm

I think I'd choose O3 if forced. Either are fine but I like the way the first displays the stars and lettering in greater contrast to the fields than the second does. Of course, the greater "black and white" contrast of the second photo is what I shoot for in my own work, so take me with a grain of salt.

I like 03 better. 05 looks like it has too much white and distorts some of the details (the leaves)

I'd go for the first one (03).

to CCF I would pick 03. In 05 looks like she just sneezed!

03, but I do not like the way the light hides her eye. This always makes me very suspicious on ebay coins. Jim

I also like 03 better. Notice behind Liberty's hair: there is something there on 05 but not in 03.

I like them both.. you get different details with each. Was just the lighting angle different?

Quote: Was just the lighting angle different? It looks like 03 was lit from about 11:00, and 05 from about 1:00. Either the light itself, or the white balance adjustment on the camera, changed as well, as the color of the coin differs. 03 is a little "yellower" than the coin probably is in reality, but after years of looking at ebay photographs I make those corrections subconsciously.

Actually I use two desk lamps on either side with two candelabra bulbs in each lamp.

If you play a bit with the proper white balance setting ( not on Auto!!) and maybe the Lens opening, and a little bit less, or more diffused light, you will have it eventually perfect. I have been playing with this for a while now.. ans till do not come close to yours. what camera are you using and what is your setup? HHB

I'm using a Kodak EasyShare Z710. Like I said, I use two desk lamps on either side and each lamp has two candelabra bulbs.
