I agree damage and I agree it is neat. My best guess is that someone tried to pierce it with a square nail. These were obsolete in the US well before 1929, but still might have been rattling around in some folk's mason jars of old nails.

Farriers still use square nails for horseshoes. Well, rectangular cross-section, at least.
