Hello All - first post!

I have, IMO, a unique and very old coin that needs to be identified with assurances towards authenticity and era. I am hopeful that this forum will be able to assist me in this endeavor. Thank you - pics to follow!

Upon further investigation, this coin could be attributed to Spain under Ferdinandus V and Elisibet I with denomination of l Real.

There are a lot of replicas, fakes, look-a-likes and promotional coins like this one.
I was fooled by one popular dealer at one of the big coin shows.
Maybe fooled me because it fooled him as well.

@ddr, first welcome to CCF. Second, while I agree with your tentative assessment, @albert brings up a really good point. I'm going to move your thread over to the medieval coin section where hopefully it will be seen by a couple of specialists in this area. It may take them time to weigh in, so please check in periodically. While you are waiting, please add the diameter and weight of this piece to the thread as that may help. Thx.

First, yes, if the size and weight are correct it looks like a Spanish 1 real of Ferdiand and Isabella (too bad we are a little late for Columbus Day ).

Second, my feeling is that it is probabaly authentic, as there are signs of production irregularities. On the shield side, you can see a second impression of the shield at the left that is rotated by perhaps 10 degrees. On the arrow side, the beaded inside circle does not join up correctly. Possibly a double strike with some rotation? A later replica is not likely to have these features (these types of mistakes on a coin from this era don;t add value like for a modern "error coin", but generally detract).

Third, there were seven different mints striking the coin, and there were two different scripts used (yours is the gothic, not the Latin, meaning it was probably from the earlier years). https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces32164.html

The condition of your coin and the irregular strike could make it hard to determine which mint, but here are some examples which also give an idea of the value. My guess is possibly Segovia which uses its famous aqueduct as its mint mark.

Toledo: I could not find an example with gothic script

Interesting historical coin!

Thank you to all for the welcome and information provided!

I have performed some measurements and the following are from my instruments which I cannot confirm that calibration is 100%.

This coin weighs in at 3.5g, diameter = 26.9mm and thickness is .03mm.

@ddris, those measurements are in line with expectations for that 1 real type, continuing to confirm your original ID.
