Does this spike or upside down stake a crack in the rim that broke off and rolled to the side? What is noticeable is the letters in DIME are visible.

It looks like PMD. The metal looks displaced from a well placed hit.

I agree with PMD. Looks like the edge took a hit breaking part of the rim which folded in and eventually pressed onto the reverse. An image of the edge in that area would be helpful.
