Every now and then I check craigslist to see if anyone is ever offering up any coins. I thought for sure their would be a elderly person or a retireing collector or someone offering up something on there eventually. I've never found anything in my area.

Until today....

And I'm sure those aren't high grade or key coins he's selling.

This is typical. Most people browsing Craigslist are "armchair collectors" who don't really know anything about values but will buy anything described as "old" or "antique" without regard to any real authority to gauge by. You often see them at garage sales marching around with their dog-eared copies of Warman's Antiques Guide, squinting at the pictures within and comparing them to items that "look almost like" the pictures.

Of course, some have identified these people as the kind that will buy anything from a vaguely worded ad at Craigslist or kijiji or Buy and Sell. One of my favorites is this guy here in the Osborne Village area of Winnipeg who puts ads along the lines of this:

or this:

or this:

http://www.buysell.com/root/detail/...cate_of.aspx

or even this:

Since they list their phone numbers, I urge everyone here to step right up and buy them!

LATE ADDITION: Check this out!

Give that guy in Shereveport the benefit of the doubt, maybe they are all 1921-S or something...

And maybe the great pumpkin really does exist Charlie Brown.

I check the Craigslist collectibles area all the time for Madison, and any city within 100 miles. I try to use many different keywords to help with the search:

coin
coins (for some reason, this produces different results)
silver
gold
cent/penny/pennies
nickel/nickle
quarter
half/halves

Most stuff on there is overpriced, but someday there will be a good find. You just have to keep looking.

I have had good luck by posting a want ad on there though, with somewhere around 30 deals done in 15 months.

Hi Everyone,

I don't actually use craigslist. What I do use is kijiji. Maybe you might want to check there as well. YOu can choose by state and by city to find pretty much anything. Usually when it's coins I am looking for, I go to arts and collectibles and then type coin in the search bar. There's always something. :)
