I purchased this coin from a dealer who did not want to take time to try to identify this coin. After searching online for an hour without success I thought I'd pick your brains on this stumper. The coin appears to be made out of silver, weighs 3.27 grams and has a diameter of 16-17.5 mm. Any hints or help is greatly appreciated!

@dwa, what an odd thing for a coin dealer to say. I can't imagine why they wouldn't want to figure out what they are selling.

Anyways, I'm no expert in Roman coins, but the reverse looks a whole lot like a depiction of Mount Argaios in Cappadocia, Caesarea. Someone more knowledgeable than I am will be able to tell you which emperor this is.

This is an AR coin of Antoninus Pius from Caesarea Cappadocia (as Spence called).

I believe this type: https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/4/6924

If the dealer is selling a lot of coins he might legitimately not have the time to look up all of them...

Argaeus, Cappadocia; that volcano type is very recognizable.

The obverse reads [...]O[K?]PANIWNCI... and I can't make any sense of that; it doesn't look like any emperor name I can think of.
I think the initial letters might be AYTOKPA for Autocrator, but the rest of it doesn't feel like it assembles into an emperor's name either.

[EDIT: I really should have thought of the AYTOKP ANTWNEINOC option, but that T looked too much like I and that E looked too much like C.]

Thank you so much for contributing. The mixture of Roman and Greek letters threw me for a loop so I originally thought the coin was Byzantine. Now I know that some of Roman provinces that were in the Greek sphere of influence used a mixture of these letters. I think it's a nice piece, not the highest, especially the reverse, but I think its a nice example of that time period. I appreciate all of your comments!

- Nice coin - I have a Tiberius of the same type.. I too was stumped, but I found out that this was a Drachm not a Denarius. My early years of collecting.

It's not that surprising that a dealer didn't identify the coin. I have bought unidentified lots before, but if you have to do the work then you should certainly pay less, quite a bit less. When I say unidentified, I don't mean unidentifiable. if the portrait and obverse are reasonably complete with most of the legends complete, then it is just a matter of putting in the work. Your coins I would have called identifiable, for sure, and it proved to be the case.

So many dealers are busy processing all the coins they are buying from the public, many times they don't have time to do the research. That can turn out to be a blessing to us who enjoy putting in the time to identify the coins and find out the history about them because the dealers will usually sell them at a very reasonable price.
