I've been monkeying around with different lighting and backgrounds for silver coinage. With some silvers, I have an incredibly difficult time getting the coin to look "in hand".

I've typically used off-white / grey which I assume fits the 30-40% threshold mentioned everywhere. Would like your thoughts on this blue background. IMO it is a true representation of the coin, in-hand. It also seems to emphasize hits, cracks, and so on much better.

I've tried black, white, and off-white with little success on some coins. Any other colors recommended? Do you think the blue is distracting? Coin too dark?

FYI - it is an LED light generating the blue color laid in front of the coin. The background sheet under the coin is actually white.

I swing a metal detector and have a knack for finding dirty old coins.

Definitely don't like a colored background, DOCC.

Ok, I'll punt. Such a struggle with some coins...so frustrating.

DOCC, circulated silver coins are the easiest. Try photographing proof silver coins if you want a challenge.

No thank you Hondo - I've tried, I've failed.

Need to figure out how GC does it. There is definitely some type of liquid involved as a number of my purchases - and me using the GreatPhoto - show super small distortions which appear to be a bead of liquid.

I took this photo of a coin I'm flipping and it generated much interest. I used a black cloth as background and then cut out the coin and use black background. Took this photo with a phone.
The real size is 5mb but had to reduce it for posting here

I suggest black or white blue distracts

Personally black or white looks best ... ones own preference in cataloging is most important ...
