The leaves which you show in close-up are not very good markers for obverse variety. Even though CaC is a very good online resource, information is often incomplete or misleading. The best description of OBV1 vs. OBV2 can be found in Coins Of Canada by Haxby and Willey.
ICCS no longer attributes S96 or L96.
Not that many years ago there were L99 and S99 1899 varieties listed, those have gone by the wayside and recent catalogues only list hooked or plain 99's.
The 96 varieties may be under revision and we will have to wait and see what changes come about. I see both wide 96 and narrow 96 but I have not seen as many coins as the experts. With a mintage of only 125,000 it wouldn't be surprising that each reverse die used can be identified.
