Hello again!

I am not sure if I'm posting in the correct forum, but I'm giving this one a try since technically it was minted in the US. I wanted request any general information regarding this 1944-S US Philippines coin. Grade, value, fun facts, &/or all of the above!

Please let me know if you would like me to provide any further details &/or photos!

Per usual, thank yall for being awesome!

AU details, harshly cleaned and/or polished.
It's a silver coin (0.750 AR/0.250 CU) struck and minted at the San Francisco Mint but designed in the Philippines.
Your coin is type II (mountain edge overlaps 3 denticles)

The United States had previously minted coins for the Philippines in the early part of the 20th c. having replaced the previous coins struck under the Spanish rule of Isabel II & Alfonso. This continued until 1936.

The Philippine coins later used centavos and pesos as their units instead of continuing with the original Spanish arrangement of maravedies / reales after Spain had changed to the centimo and peseta.

The original US coins from 1903-1936 included a 1 centavo and 1 peso but those denominations were not minted after 1936.

During the Commonwealth era (starting 1936) they retained the centavo and peso for unit denominations and the US minted coins in 1937, 1938 and 1941 at Denver; the Philippines minted the same coins at Manila. The coins included a 5 centavo, 10 centavo, 20 centavo, and 50 centavo only. There were no circulating pesos struck during that time.

In WWII after liberating the Philippines the US began to mint coins again for use on the islands in 1944-1945. The silver 50 centavo coins were struck at San Francisco (ca. 40m. of them minted); the silver 10 centavo coins were struck at Denver (ca. 180m. minted); and the silver 20 centavo coins were also struck at Denver (ca. 120m. minted.) The nickel 5 centavo was struck at Philadelphia and San Francisco for 1944, and San Francisco only for 1945 (ca. 136m. minted.) Mintage continued into 1946 (although those coins are all dated 1945) so the mintage totals include coins struck in 1946 as well.

There is a relatively scarce D/S overmintmark variety for the 1944 20 centavos.

A great many of the post-liberation coins were brought home as souvenirs by soldiers; many more did not see much circulation, and all of the issues are plentiful in higher grades from XF and above, with Uncirculated issues being widely available.

This is one of the very few times (or maybe even the only time?) the US has struck coins at all three mints (Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco) on behalf of another country.

This is a particular interest of mine - coins struck at U.S. Mint facilities for other countries. I have a pretty good mix of these coins, particularly Philippines, Australian and Netherlands issues. I've yet to pick up any 50 Centavos or Pesos, but they are on my want list. One of my latest pickups was a 1907 / curved 7 20-Centavos coin from Mexico. This is the only coin the New Orleans mint struck for a foreign nation.

Can't say for sure about other instances, but all three U.S. Mint facilities also struck coins for the Netherlands East Indies (Indonesia) during WWII.
