Just got this nice Buffalo nickel 1913-S type 2 (with almost 1.3 million minted). What grade would you give it? I think it is MS or high AU. Full horn, split tail - Liberty is weak but that was a problem with the minting of these coins and was fixed in later years. In addition I'm not seeing any signs of contact hits or dings on it. *** Moved by Staff moved to a more appropriate forum. ***

Very nice Buffalo - could be an MS state coin from a pair of worn dies.
EDIT: Forgot to mention - Very cool clash!

thanks Marve, that is what I'm thinking, if it were circulated, I would expect to see some (if not even one) circulation hit on it. I see no hits on this one.

Nice example with smooth fields. I think it is MS but I can't get a feel for the luster.

in hand it has a nice luster, difficult to get a good image of it, I'm losing the light now, so tomorrow, I'll take it near a natural light setting an try to image it again.

The end of the long feather and the word LIBERTY seem to have some wear. Other than that, it looks perfect. So I'd say AU.

Liberty and the long feather struck up weak on the early versions of these coins - a die issue I believe - it was fixed in 1916.

Dearborn is correct. you are seeing die polishing, Die Deterioration and even some strike weakness here. this is what makes buffs one the more difficult series to assess. looks like LDS I'm not seeing any signs of circulation on the highest points on either side. you never know how a TPG will assess these. some graders are aware of the issues that surround this series and others not so much. i'll go with MS63 taking into consideration everything

I don't see any wear on the high points. MS-63.

Thanks Panzaldi and Indiangoldeagle I appreciate your comments and the understanding of the difficulty of these coins when trying to get a grade on them.

Without seeing it in hand this one is too close to call but I'm leaning towards MS. What causes the rough appearance of the surfaces?

That is the design of these coins. There are no true flat surfaces

I'll say MS-63 very nice clash also. This one should get graded.
