Hello, Ran across this bill. I thought I knew a little about the printing process on a dollar bill. Well, this bill makes me question that. From what I understand, three total prints for a bill. The back of the bill is one, the black on the front is another and the green on the front is the third. On this bill all the black looks faded or under inked except for the seal that has which reserve its from. The black on it is dark. Because I was thinking that maybe is was washed or something. But then wouldn't all the black be faded along with the green. The green is bold and the reserve seal is bold and the rest looks like it went through a washi g machine a few times but the bill is new and crisp. Just wondering what the experts think about it. Thank you.

You're correct about the printing process. The green, intaglio back is printed first. The black, intaglio front is second and the black and green overprint that includes the Treasury seal, serial numbers, Fed.seal and indicators are third and last.

The green ink used on the back is different than the green ink used for the Treasury seal and serial numbers. It's formulated completely different. The picture quality is poor, but it appears that whatever environmental or chemical trauma that affected the black ink on the front didn't affect the green ink used for the seal and serial numbers. I'm fairly confident that this happened after it left the BEP.
