Guessing this is just unusual, and most attractive, environmental toning.

This coin just looks like mild environmental toning. More importantly it would need a metal composition analysis to determine if it's an experimental alloy blank or not... ya never know. (though, Virginia was not on the list of the state coins struck)

That was my first thought too, but Yeah Seeker may be right. hopefully you may have a cool experimental State Quarter here.

Exactly Tacc!! Could be expensive to find out you have a coin worth 25¢. But then if is an experimental planchet its money well spent. This site gives a few other visual indicator's. If none are there, I would call it normal. https://mikebyers.com/exp25cset.html

Quote: In 1999 and 2000 some quarters were struck on experimental planchets If you are going to post articles then make sure you read through them first. It states: "A small number of experimental planchet State Quarters are known for each of the five 1999 states: Delaware, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and New Jersey." And in 2000: " The 2000-P Massachusetts Statehood Quarter was struck on a 100 grain planchet of an unknown alloy composition." And being experimental there was no mention of these quarters being released into circulation. There was no mention of the Virginia quarters being struck on experimental planchets.

@Marve: I did read through it and it was posted to show what what an experimental planchet was. The 2nd article I posted shows that some made it into circulation and not all planchets were the same composition. Nothing exists until it does and it generally only does when some sends to a TPG.
