*** Edited by Staff to clarify the topic title. Please put as much info in the title as you can, they are very important. ***

I came across this from a new roll of pennies. It looks as if the damage is contained only to certain areas. Does anyone know what causes this?

Appears to be post-strike damage, yes. Looks like a contact scrape.

Damage - yes. When you see scrape marks and the underlying zinc planchet exposed it is PMD.
