I recently was reviewing one of my Indian Head albums and happen to flip over the album page and was surprised that my 1864 L was 180 degree reversed from all others on the page. I had never noticed this before. My question is how rare or common is this occurrence? Of all of my Indian Heads, this is the only one with a rotated reverse.

Rotated Indian cents are my specialty, and I have 20 different dates with rotated dies between 90 and 180 degrees! The 3 most common dates for significant rotated dies are 1864L, 1868 (proof), and 1897. The rotated die census puts the population estimate for 1864L rotated Indian cents at an R4, meaning between 81 and 200 examples are believed to exist. I personally think they're cool, but less than 200 people collect them if you know what I mean.

Thanks for the information on the rarity for this coin. I agree, I think it is a pretty cool look. I showed it to a non coin collecting friend and he thought it was very unusual. I have been looking at clashed coins. What little info I was able to find indicated that clashed coins with other denomination are sought after by collectors, but a clash with the same type of coin is not collected by many. I have seen Indian heads clashed with the obverse and reverse dies and I like the look. Maybe some day they will get more attention.

Look for a rotated 1864 Two Cent Piece to accompany the cent. There are plenty of them out there; and, rotated up to 180 degrees, too.

Just wanted to add that there are many 1864L rotated Indian cents with a MPD. If you provide a closeup picture of your date, we can look into that also.

Congrats on the re-find.

The one I won in a group of Lincoln's a couple of years ago was rotated as well.

Here is the date closeup that was requested. It looks like 1864 over 86.

Nice RPD. People will pay a little extra for that - moreso than the rotated dies. The two together doesn't seem to add additional interest.
