This is my first topic here, but suffice it to say that I have lurked the forum for a long time (roughly 15 years). I have been reluctant to post here unless I believe I have an interesting question that only this group can answer. My situation is as follows. Recently (in the past few years), there has been a spate of Jefferson nickel DDR discoveries, prompting me to go through my own modern Jeffersons. While doing so, I discovered several unlisted DDRs that were similar to those in the Wexler / VV / CR Die Varieties files, but also one which did not seem to fit. Here, I present that coin, which is a 2008 P Jefferson nickel featuring apparent doubling at the BOTTOM of the central doorway rather than the top, where pre-2022 Jeffersons usually feature Class IX doubling. It also has some possible doubling in other locations above the steps, within one of the windows, and on the letters "MONTICELLO." The doubling is very reminiscent of that featured on the 2023 doubled dies, but is found on a coin minted 15 years earlier.

To CCF! I'm thinking it's a DDR. Tanman should take a look at this. I'll email him for you.

This is pretty bizarre. I would not expect this kind of doubling on a 2008 nickel, assuming it is a DDR. I'm not 100% certain if this is a DDR based on these photos. I think this would need to be examined in-hand. This would be in the interest of Brian Ribar.

Thanks for the input and warm welcomes! I will be sending this one off to Brian Ribar (along with a couple of fairly significant 2022/3 unlisted DDRs) for sure.
Also, thank you Tanman for your great work keeping doubleddie.com up and running!

Definitely an interesting nickel. Has it ever been established what change in process led to the 2022-2023 doubled dies along the bottom door edge? It always seemed strange that the doubling position switched from nearly 100% at the top of the door to 100% elsewhere. For the record, I have seen that clipping on the top of the word Monticello—and specifically the TIC—on many 2006-2021 nickels. I believe it is Die Deterioration or Machine Doubling, and the examples I have found seem to lack the rounded quality of 2022 and 2023 DDRs.

Quote: Has it ever been established what change in process led to the 2022-2023 doubled dies along the bottom door edge? Not for certain, but the US mint began experimenting with changing the curvature of the dies leading up to 2022 according to the US Mint's 2022 Biennial Report to Congress. If the 2024 report says they implemented this change fully in 2022 or 2023, I think that may be it. I believe it is Die Deterioration or Machine Doubling I have also seen similar Die Deterioration Doubling on the lettering, which is why I'm not 100% certain on this one. But I don't believe I have seen doubling on the steps associated with that DDD, unless I just never noticed it.
