My favorite coin in my entire collection has to be this 1897 Morgan that is richly dark toned. The obverse is beautiful in itself, but more striking is the reverse with it's orange glow surrounding the eagle and letters. The details of the breast and neck feathers are so fine you can see fine lines even within the feathers themselves. I am wanting to grade and auction this coin, but I am a new collector and have never graded or had a coin go to auction. Looking at this, do you think this is a high grade coin or not, and worthy of the expense and trouble to auction? Thanks

Common date that, in my opinion, would not be worthy of submitting. I suspect if you did submit you would get a details grade for artificial toning.
I swing a metal detector and have a knack for finding dirty old coins.

Handsome coin, but not worth submitting.

If you want to sell it then you will probably make the most money in your pocket on ebay. Common date toned Morgans do pretty well on there. Grading and Auction fees can actually wipe out your selling profit.

I would have to agree with what has been said above. If you like it, I suggest keeping it. You will get very little out of it and will regret selling it. Here is another common date coin that I still hate to this day selling. Got just a little better than melt for it. I suggest keeping it in a 2x2 and let it turn more.

Darker patination makes it a bit difficult to grade from on screen pics.
It may? have suffered mild heat stress.
Breast feathers nicely struck up: one of the things I always concentrate on, when looking at Morgans.

, not worth the expense of third party grading, but very much a keeper.

That coins, to me, would be a "desk sitter" ... right in front of me to be enjoyed ALL the time. I wouldn't spend the money to grade. One can buy a slabbed common date in MS63 all day, for $65-$70. Cost of grading, plus shipping would render it a questionable "cost vs. value" proposition. ENJOY !
