@dou, sorry but I think that surface color is almost always due to chemical/environmental exposure rather than a mint error.

Environmental factors can tone coins to many different colors. PMD.

If this coin sat for a long time in a Whitman folder , for example, the obverse will tone out,, while the reverse is protected from the environmental elements (such as the air we breathe)

Just some type of toning. Nickels often tend to tone a light golden color.
