I've tried twice now to post about how I came to have a few of the coins in my "collection", but it doesn't seem to be showing. Maybe because I'm trying to attach an image (a .jpg about 67k in size). Mu mother's aunt found this while walking the beach where we live. This was at least 50 years ago.

@don, first welcome to CCF. Second, I've split off this post from your other thread as best practice is to start a new thread for each new coin/question. Also, it is generally helpful to include pics of both sides of the coin as well as a diameter and weight when you are looking for identification. Thx.

Its a Spanish 1722 Pistareen piece.

A Spanish 1722 Pistareen is a silver coin, specifically a 2 reales piece, minted in Spain during the early 18th century. The term "pistareen" was used in the American colonies to refer to this coin.

Here are some key details about the Spanish 1722 Pistareen:

Composition: Silver

Weight: Approximately 6.77 grams

Fineness: 0.9030 (90.30% pure silver)

Obverse Design: Crowned arms with the legend "PHILIPPUS V D G" (Philip V, by the grace of God)

Reverse Design: Cross with castles and lions in an octolobe pattern, with the legend "HISPANIARUM REX" (King of Spain)

The pistareen was widely circulated in the British colonies of the West Indies and later in the United States and Canada until the early 19th century. It was valued at 20 cents in the U.S. until it was demonetized in 1827.

I bought an example, in about the same condition for $10, a very long time ago.

What a great find!
I would be ecstatic to find such a piece in decent condition while beach walking.
Similar pieces typically sell in the range of $30 to $75 in my experience,
depending on condition and mint.
It is a fun coin to be working on a date run.
