I just obtained a couple of rolls of wheat cents. They are covered in oxidation "dust". I'm not advocating coin cleaning; however something has to be done to these. I'll wipe with a soft cloth, but I think I'll probably need more. Would MS 70 work or mineral spirits or what? Distilled water?

Gigi, if it's just dust, try rinsing them with distilled water. Or a quick soak in acetone.

That should do the trick.

A couple example 'dust' photos would be interesting to see.

Gigi, can you please post up at least one image so we can see what you have going on? We could possibly be able to help batter.

But for now, it looks like Hondo gave you a start to clearing up the coins.

I'm on the "quick soak in acetone" side.

I don't think you can tell much by the look. They all show a lot of circulation; however it's more how it feels...like a wrench that's spent years in a rusty old toolbox. Hard to explain.

Looks like they may have sat in a corrosive environment for many years before being rolled. If they're pitted, there's probably not much you can do to "restore " them. On the bright side, they don't have much numismatic value, so you could pick any common date to experiment with.
