I'm not sure which Charlton you have, but the 10th edition quotes a letter from James Anderson, the chief factor of the HBC at Moose Factory, to the governor of the HBC concerning the shipping of tokens not in use at Eastmain. In it, he states that he "shall have them marked so as to be known from those used in East Main Distt." I imagine that this is inferred to be the punch mark.
I haven't found any other reference that addresses this specifically, but an article by Willey (Nov 1982 CNJ) has a different take, asserting that the punch mark was used to cancel them upon presentation for redemption in Eastmain.
