This coin sold for $420 plus buyers premium which would be a steal if the coin is an authentic brass coin. The colour looks blotchy and the rim edge appears darker in spots. It's almost as if someone took a can of gold spray paint to it. I don't think it's a brass cent but curious to know what everyone else thinks.

It is a known die pair of an 1859 W9/8 cent. My guess is the color is due to environmental reasons or cleaning. I doubt very much it is brass. If brass, it would be a steal as the first known W9/8 brass cent.

I wondered about that. I've still got a lot to learn about Vicky cents, but the pictures of brass cents that I found were narrow 9s, and this particular coin was a wide 9/8, so to me it was another indicator that the colour was some sort of post mint alteration.

Any number of cleaning agents that you can find under the sink can turn a bronze '59 brassy. Read the CN journal article on the brass '59's from a few years ago. Although this was an early strike, as seen by the very small vine break at leaf 7, I don't think that it was brass. The brass ones came from an improper mix of the alloy as it was poured. What Bosox said should be taken as gospel.

Okiecoiner, I appreciate the knowledge that both you and Bosox provide to this forum. My apologies if my previous comments sounded like I was challenging or disagreeing with what Bosox said. That was not my intent. I look forward to, and appreciate any and all comments/advice that both of you provide. I am a long time collector, but only recently became interested in Vicky cents, mostly as a result of this forum and posts from members like you.

Please excuse in advance my novice Two Cents on the thread.

One can get an authoritative third-party opinion in three weeks, for less than $100 invested, to positively identify a coin. The upside for an owner and an auctioneer of this coin would be thousands. That they chose to sell it raw, with disclaimers, should tell you what you need to know. IMHO an obvious conversation piece to get dreamers like me and gamblers excited about bidding.
