Take a look at these two Jefferson nickels. The P mint mark seems to be different.

There's nothing unusual about them. Through 1989, mint marks were punched by hand into the working dies. As such, there was some variability in the exact location where it was placed.

Mint mark positions varied, since they used to be punched by hand into the dies.

@dou, the advice we usually give is that if the mintmark is touching some other design element, then it is far enough away from the ideal spot to produce a numismatic premium. Otherwise, it is worth face value, but still interesting to provide a learning opportunity for how the mint made coins during this time period.
