I imagine you mean "Varieties" instead of "Errors"? Varieties are attributed as many come off of a die, while an error is usually a one off problem with the planchet or a die striking problem.

Aren't all mint errors .......Variations?
die chip.......die crack .......double strike ...or double die.....
why is that not considered a mint error ?
from the spitting horse ...to the pooping horse ...... and beyond....
A double stamped UNITED STATES OF AMERICA .....
What is the difference between a mint error and a variation ?
All these "variations " came out of the Mint in ERROR...
Every 1955 penny is not a double die......
Please help me understand....
Thanks

Is a 1955 Double Die Penny a MINT ERROR..?
Or a VARIETION .. ?
Not all 1955 pennies were "double die" .....
....So that is a "VARIATOIN" of the 1955 penny ?
IMO Variations of Errors ARE errors
IMO EVERY ERROR IS A VARIATION of the ERROR that came from the US MINT.
Please explain.
I want to Emphasize that I am a Novice and I welcome everyone input...
Thank you much.
Having trouble with this terminology....
Thanks

to the CCF The accepted terminology is 'Variety' vs 'Error' A variety is created when the die used for a particular coin has an unusual aspect that differs from the 'normal' coin for that date. The key distinguishing factor is that every coin struck with that die has the same exact difference from a normal coin. There can be thousands plus of the same exact variety struck by that single die. Varieties are identified and cataloged in multiple on-line sources. The 1955 doubled die obverse Lincoln Cent is a Variety. The 1970-S small date Lincon cent is a Variety. Your horse quarters (whatever that is) are a Variety. An error is created when an otherwise normal coin struck by an otherwise normal die experiences an unusual event in the coining chamber itself. Had the unusual event not occurred the coin would have been a normal coin. A coin struck off-center would be an Error. The very next coin in the same coining chamber with the same die might not be struck off-center, hence errors tend to be one at a time versus varieties where all the coins contain the attribute. Hope that makes sense to you.

For your State and ATB Quarters, I recommend looking at doubleddie.com and variety vista for doubling. Those sites will listings that cross but may also have listings that do not cross reference so both are needed. Look at the listings for a quarter and then look at all your quarters that state paying attention to where doubling occurs in the listings. I can tell you for most State Quarters the doubling on the obverse occurs at Washington's ear. Quite a few years have no doubling on the reverse. For some reason, Philadelphia minted coins tend to have more doubled dies than Denver minted coins. Beyond doubled dies, a quick cursory look at the front and back of the coin should be done looking for die chips, die cracks, and clashes. Note that all these things will be raised features on the coin. A struck-through-grease will have details missing from the coin without any evidence of damage. If you have a coin with a question, post it on the forum.
