Just received my Nebraska quarters from the mint and have to admit they were mighty fast in shipment. The finish on all the coins is above the their normal standard and most of the coins are in realative good shape for circulation type coins. Now a quick comment or two about the design;
If you know anything about that part of the country, you recognize the landscape around "chimney rock'' in western Nebraska. You also know that the Oregon trail is located south of chimney rock, which brings up the next point. The wagon and oxen are apparently traveling the wrong direction (east) as the rock would be looking in a northerly direction. It would be late in the day as the sun is setting in the west. Guess who ever it is in the wagon has been as far as they intended to go and has started back home again to Indiana.
Take a look and see if you don't agree that they did the scene backwards!

Thas my Family in the wagon, were headed back to the Platte River, and central Nebraska away from them there mountians !!
LOL I think your right,, the scene looks backwards !!
and by the way, my Family did settle in central NE.

There is no one in their right mind that would turn around, after reaching that far west, to come back to Indiana. Perhaps they are looking for a gas statiion or bed and breakfast? And of course they may just be circling Chimney Rock for a photo opportunity? Personally I saw the same thing when I first held my proof set and the thought occured to me that ALL Mint engravers have never been west and none of them uses a map or compass!

I like the quarter design, but I did feel something was wrong when I first saw it. Basically, I do like the 2006 Statehood Quarters. I think they are best of the bunch to this point. |

Good observation Dan,
A keen eye for such a young man......Haaa!!.......If I had to make a guess as to why it is like that I would say that the artist/engravers conception or original drawings may have been produced by using a photograph.....which is a reflection of what we actually see.......any thoughts?

I hadn't noticed it, but now that you mention it, it does look backwards. I just thought the quarter was pretty at first glance. I just got my proof set today, and all of the quarters look great in Proof! I think I know why the wagon is turning around and heading back to Indiana. At least in my part of the state, it's amazing how far out of their way people will go to find a gas station that's a few cents cheaper!  Rachel [:p] |

It would have to be setting if this direction was 'west' and as it is fairly low in the sky, it would be rather late in the day. |

Looks like to me they are north of Chimney Rock headed west after all and they started real early! Breaking camp as the sun came up?

Having been there not too many summers back, I think maybe I can agree with Terry.
Getting an early start and heading for Oregon, rather than heading back east to cheaper gas in Indiana.

Another possibility. I'm sure the early poineers were tourists in some respects, and maybe they were just circling Chimney Rock for a good overall view!!!!

Who really knows, both Gary and Terry could be absolutely right and everything is as intended. Now, having said this, I will only add the following for your consideration.
*Almost without exception the old trails always took the high ground and not the river bottoms when moving across America's heart land. The land between this marker and the North Platte River is only about 1/2 mile north of the marker, and this is all in flood plain during the spring and early thaws along the river. Most travelers avoided such low areas and took the high ground. Which would be south of the marker.
*The area north of the marker was where the state built the highway between Terrytown and Bridgeport. They wouldn't have been allowed to get anywhere close to the original Oregon trail in order to save this historic feature.
*Travelers in those days were not the 'sightseeing' type, and would not have taken the time to spend a day going around the marker just to see what the other side looked like.
Haveing said all that, it still makes a good story and explains how Terry got back to Indiana.

Actually we kind of laid down for a nap and when we awoke we continued to ride towards the sun not knowing we had napped all night so we were now headed East instead of West. By the time we figured out our mistake we were already back in Indiana! Sure seemed like a long sunset though!
