In four years a new President could order cents to be made again for the good of all Americans, an honored tradition.....
I would never bet on that happening. Once they are gone and we have adapted, no one will want them back in circulation.

Not to mention:

"Yes, zinc fumes can be toxic, causing metal fume fever and other health problems.
Symptoms:
Chills, Fever, Muscular pain, Nausea, Vomiting, Shortness of breath, Severe chest pains, Pneumonia, Headache, and Malaise"

I'm guessing there aren't going to be that many "Backyard smelters"

I must remind, we still have a melt ban in place, just so you DIY types are aware.

They stopped making pennies? Since when?

Are you referring to the executive order to do so? A president cannot stop the production of coins. Only Congress can do so.

"U.S. code gives the Treasury Secretary the authority to mint and issue coins "in amounts the secretary decides are necessary to meet the needs of the United States."
If Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent decides the amount necessary for the penny is zero, he's within his legal rights.
Congress, which dictates currency specifications like the size and metal content of coins, could make Trump's order permanent through law."

The law say the Mint can mint pennies, not that is must. The President can tell the Treasury to stop the Mint from making them, just as a previous one did for the dollar coins. In the latter case, they became NIFC, which I expect the same for the cent because those are sold for well above cost.

Okay, seriously, can we go back in time and have the double-dime replace the quarter?
