I recently noticed this 1976 quarter that appears to have doubling on the reverse of the words "UNITED STATES OF" as well as the stairs at the 9, 10 and 11 o'clock positions. I would opinions on if this coin would be worth grading or not and if this would be a desirable coin for collectors or is the doubling too minor or the condition too poor? Please let me know your thoughts.

@mju, first welcome to CCF. Second, that step-like doubling that serves to reduce the width of the letters is machine doubling--not the result of a doubled die.

To CCF! Your coin is showing Machine Doubling. No premium. Not worth the time or money having it slabbed by a TPG. Getting a coin graded by a TPG is very expensive, and most of the time it's not even worth it.

This is machine or Strike Doubling, fairly common, use the search field on this web site to find out more information about it.

Edit: I'm too slow, spence and errer got to you first. also.

Not a DD. But, the coin does appear to have two nice spikehead die cracks---one emanating from the rim through T in LIBERTY, and another extending from just below the Y.

Very slight MD - not even a good example to keep as a comparison coin. Just a spender unless you collect clad Bicentennial coinage.

I thank everyone for their response, I was unfamiliar with Machine Doubling but it sounds like this is fairly common if it is not worth the effort. It sounds like I've got quite a bit to learn.

Thanks again.
