Just a question to ponder here.
Brass is a relatively soft metal compared, for example, to steel. Even so, an object the size of this coil may well have left some type of damage on the reverse die. I wonder if there are other 1888 nickels that show some residual damage from this event?
The search itself wouldn't be too difficult. The obverse die has a distinct die chip between the top of the "1" and the bottom of the portrait. The key complications would be the relative scarcity of 1888 nickels in higher grades, the obvious die state of this particular die pair, and whether the mint polished the reverse dies soon after this event.
It may be a futile rabbit-chasing event, but it could be an interesting project for someone who wants to research and write the most niche article in
Liberty nickel history.
