I firmly believe this is caused in a similar way to "Trail Dies". "Trail dies" have been shown to be an after-effect of die polishing by Will Brooks.

Quote: I'm not so sure. Nothing even close to a resemble on the Trail Dies Dollar page. I'm not into trail dies myself so it's interesting there is a page for the dollars. Most devices affected by trail dies are not shaped like the rays, so I wouldn't expect them to look exactly the same. But the ray itself looks similar to a huge trail die and I think that comes into play if you get the direction of the polishing head going in just the right direction I'll reach out to Will and see if he has any opinion or insight. (He is the author of the theory about how trial dies are formed and was able to proved it.)

I would have to agree with Marve on this, as far as it not being a trail die. They typically have a wispy look to them and this is rough and grainy looking. On top of that, there are usually other trails showing, at least on the same side of the coin. I really think this may have been a one off thing on a die, some kind of damage.

I would check with him too but pi**ed him off in a text a month or so ago and have not heard from mensa since. I like using the little m for Mensa when I refer to him, he does not like it.

Here's an article in CoinWorld from July of 2017 about Trail dies. Will Brooks is the researcher referenced in the article. Ray Parkhurst (yep, our very own rprpms) took the images for the article. https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-c...side-cw.htmlHere is Will's reply to my inquiry: "I had looked at this a while ago as I recall. I agree with you that that thing pretty much has to be a polishing trail. There simply isn't any other reasonable explanation for it. Only a psychopath would believe they intentionally tried to change the design on a single business strike working die. A random die gouge seems extremely unlikely, but I guess can't be 100% ruled out. Either way, it's Mint-originated die damage." If you read the article, it explains the polishing tool and intricacies involved with polishing. IMHO, the shape of the ray may work like a funnel, when the polishing is in a certain direction, to direct the polishing towards the narrow end. When I blowup the GC image there looks to be a long die scratch above the ray. The polishing idea may be rubbish, but something caused the die anomaly. (Jon, maybe he likes to be the one stirring the pot? )

(Jon, maybe he likes to be the one stirring the pot? ) I actually do not have a problem with the fact it may be from polishing/abrading, but this looks absolutely nothing like any trail die I have ever seen, and I've seen several. Very surprised at Will's response, I thought better of him.

Well, whatever it is and however it formed the bidding on the coin is at $301 with 9 days to go - to me that's a bit surprising.
