I have some silver coins minted in Italy in the 19th century. Their mintmark is usually M BN or N BN. I know M meams Milan, N means Naples, but what about the BN which is always next to the mintmark inside a square? Banca Nazionale? Buon Natale?

That is an interesting question @ric. At least one online source agrees with your guess of BN = BANCA NAZIONALE = National Bank:

I'm interested to see what @roma and some of our other experts have to say about this.

Buon Natale?

I confirm, BN stands for Banca Nazionale (National Bank)

Quote:
This acronym is the monogram of the National Bank and the role it assumed in managing the production of coins of the Kingdom of Italy.
With Royal Decree no. 288 of 1861 it was established that the production of new gold and silver coins would take place "on contract
following public auctions". With the Convention of 21 December 1861, the National Bank in the Sardinian States obtained the operation of all mints for the period from 1 January 1862 to 31 December 1873, and, following an extension, until 31 December 1875. The Turin mint was managed directly by the National Bank, that of Milan by the Talanger company of Paris, that of Naples entrusted to the management of the Estivant company also of Paris, under the supervision of the Bank.
