Hey all,

I've been questioning whether this is a possible die error, planchet error, or just odd looking PMD. While combing through Error-Ref, I came across the "Split Planchet Before Strike" page and one of the reference images looked similar to what's going on here.

The reason I'm questioning whether or not this is just PMD is that the "damage" appears to be under the WE on the obverse of the coin. Additionally, the rather thick die crack under the left side of the bust suggests that the die might not have been in the best condition.

Just in case I went ahead and weighed it and it comes in at 2.53g.

Thanks for taking a look!

@xam, the flattening of the rim makes me think that this is all just damage.

@Spence I initially had the same thought but when looking at the WE I noticed that the rim is raised well above the surface and seemingly undamaged where the most material appears to be sunken in.

The flattened area is definitely PMD. Not an error.

Xamant, pretty much everything I see is just damage to the coin except a nice die crack, (spike head actually), that goes from the rim, in between the D and B of VDB. Don't know if it's listed, did not look but maybe see if it is on Cuds on Coins website.

The rim is flattened at the same location on both sides. This tells me that your coin was most likely put into a vise or something similar and crushed.
What I see is all damage.
But you do have a very nice die crack on it as well.

Thanks all for the responses! I guess that die crack got me carried away a bit and I ended up putting too much thought into the damaged aspects of the coin.

On a side note, I have a few coins that I suspect have lamination errors. Should I create a separate topic for each coin, or group them together in a single post?

A separate topic for each coin is preferred.
