Hiya!! I'm still learning but have been collecting and going through my grandfathers collection as well as a HUGE change jar of coins I've had. I ran across the 25C 1987 Washington quarter. It is gold colored and appears to possibly be something stamped previously undernearth or maybe it was just double stamped? I'm not sure but I was hoping for a little help understanding it. It weighs 5.6 g. What makes it gold colored? Also on the front I can possibly make out where little "stars" are? Almost like the outside ring of a Morgan dollar "stars" possibly? I'm just not sure. Next to the 1 in the date, seems to be another 1 just in front of it and also some lettering underneath the T and E in United on the reverse. I kinda see a small star in the resverse and lettering under the TES in STATES on the reverse. After the word AMERICA on the reverse, continues to be some more lettering, possibly and S and a T? On the obverse, in between the Liberty letters appears to be other letters as well possibly? A little help please? Thanks!!

Your pics are good enough to see those gold bits in many of the crevices of this coin. It might have been gold-plated at one point after it left the mint and then much of this wore off during continued circulation. That didn't happen at the mint though.

Agree with Spence, something was added to your coin's surface and is/has worn off.
Gold plating? maybe. Could be anything really, Science Project etc. No mixed planchet errors.

Could have been plated, and now the plating is wearing off. PMD.

At first I thought it was environmental toning, but I can see some evidence it was plated or painted. Most definitely a post mint alteration.

Agree with all above--a post-strike condition/occurrence.
