Petespockets55 Pillar of the Community United States 5767 Posts	Posted 03/07/2025 9:48 pm 1983 P Lincoln cent- Skinny "Y" on LIBERTY This struck me as an odd letter at first sight. Was it clogged with grease or what? This was in an OBW roll I picked up. A couple of things crossed my mind as a possible cause. -The "Y" was partially filled with grease -A concave area of the die in this area that caused a weak hubbing (only on this letter) -Die polishing It took me a few minutes to realize the cause but when I saw the die scratch on the shoulder, it confirmed it for me. Die scratches in the deeper part of the design told me the coin has been polished pretty aggressively and heavily. We see deformation to the tops of letters sometimes near the rim from over polishing. The tops of the letters get "skinny" near the rim, as the polishing abrades the die. The more aggressive the polishing the "skinnier" the letters get. Let's hear your thoughts. Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups. About 12 years ago I bought an overweight mint sewn bag of 1974-D cents (5600+ coins, about 12% too many) that 95% of coins in the bag are clashed and over polished. Some show clash marks on both sides while others show clashed features on only the obverse or reverse. Some are missing details of the necks, ties, vest or forehead. It's really obvious that they tried to rework the dies. They also show signs of new dies being used on one side or the other. The coins also show die rotation of 8° to 15°. Here's one that was sent to ANACS and graded MS-66 Red with the note 'OVERPOLISHED DIES.' All of the coins with very few exceptions, are the same grade or possibly higher, some with even more polishing marks. Another interesting thing I found that a very few coins show dark blue/purple fingerprints toned into the surfaces. I didn't realize that year had so many clashes. (I do like 1983P Lincoln cents for so many reasons.) Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
