I just purchased this dollar via auction for $475.00. The coin does have a hit on Washington's cheek. The coin was offered on a mostly ancient auction. Graded Good XF, AU in US standards. I appreciate all of your opinions.

Yours is the DuVall 1B variety, the most common of the known die marriages for the Lafayette Dollar.

The disturbance in the field between Lafayette's neck and the LAR of DOLLAR caught my eye. I can't get a good feel for it, but it could be anything from camera reflections to simple circulation wear to possible tooling to remove graffiti. You may want to take a closer look at that area.

Many (probably most) Lafayette Dollars are either lightly circulated, cleaned, or both. Your coin has some original luster and very little evidence of circulation. An underlying grade of AU seems solid. Congrats on snagging one!

Congrats on the purchase! It's always nice to have a Lafayette Dollar in one's collection!

I see enough "straight lines" on the portraits to lead me to wonder about a past cleaning - I suggest examining closely. The area referenced by fortcollins definitely also needs to be examined closely.

Without the coin "in hand" it's difficult for me to fully assess. I will say, however, that a grading service such as PCGS or NGC might assign a "Details" XF or AU grade once they look closely at the coin's surfaces.

Congratulations on your purchase. It's a fabulous and historic issue and always a great coin to have in one's collection.

I agree with the comments so far. I see an authentic AU range coin with a possible old cleaning.

I'd be happy with it at that price. It's got AU+ quality and no major problems. You could pay $200 or $300 more and get a certified example but why? Having a nice raw piece like that is well worth it.

Thank you for all your opinions, very much appreciated. I will definitely take a closer look when the coin arrives. I didn't really think I would win this lot, as I only placed the opening bid. There were only a few US lots in this mostly ancient and medieval
e-auction.

Congratulations on the purchase! It's really nice. I'll guess high AU for the grade.
