New poster here. I am in the process of putting together a US gold type set and decided to include some territorial gold, starting with period one California fractional gold in the 5 (6) round and octagonal varieties. Thus far, I've secured BG-111, BG-226A, BG-405 and BG-509. It is hard to find much info on the web about any of the varieties. Question is for anyone who has a copy of the Breen-Gillio book; does the book give any detailed info on the different varieties, or is it simply one that shows how to categorize them? I haven't been able to find a public source and really don't want spend the money to buy one if it's going to disappoint. Thanks.

The Breen book does give varieties but if you are just collecting a set then there is
no need to purchase a copy. Auction links will give you details as well as a general idea of value.

Thanks for the reference cointagous. I use coinfacts and the NGC website for values regularly. In my type sets, I like to put a piece-specific, few sentence narrative unique to each coin for context. Other than the general description by PCGS and others, there is just so little info available for each individual BG number. Guess I shouldn't be surprised considering the "private-issue", questionable-legality nature of these fractionals, but it is still frustrating. Anyway, thanks again.

There is a signed copy of the book on ebay.

The bowers reprint had discovery pieces in it but the price for an out of print book is sky high.
Hope this helps and good luck in collecting this overlooked area.

I have a copy of the book by R. H. Burnie - here is a random page to compare.

Thanks again to cointagous for the lead and to joewobblie for the page sample. I imagine the Breen book is similar to the Burnie book, but with addition of pictures/illustrations; both great for categorizing pieces, but sparse on background.
