Even if you travel to Mexico, you are probaly more likely to win the lottery while getting into a car accident and getting struck by lightning all at the same time.

People are worried about coins, and that cracks me up. The three "dirtiest" items, day in and day out, are 1. The Phone 2. A door knob 3. A computer keyboard. Outside the home and work, the three dirtiest are 1. Public Handrails (amusement parks are the WORST) 2. Restaurants (flatware, tables, chairs) 3. Hospitals (every germ known to man seems to find its way here). Yet none of us wears gloves when we talk on the phone, type, open a door, stand in line at Disneyland or have a steak at Sizzler!

Well, its not so much bacteria, as the grime that coins leave on the hands. I never wear gloves, just wash up when I am done.

In regards to copper having antibacterial properties is news to me.
I've just retired central services which is in the business of sterilizing items.Other things CS do is disinfect reusable items for
hospital use.
Another statement I read is to wash your hands with antibacterial
soap don't kid yourself. The most important thing is washing and rinsing well. The over counter you buy is really not a very good
antibacterial product.

I know its stupid to worry about swine flu and stuff. I was just asking a simple question about it is all. I know there are many other things on coins that are more harmful than the swine. Thank you for the relpys though.

H1N1 (Swine Flu) is a VIRUS, not a bacterium. Viruses are non-living and thus cannot be "killed". I have not studied this particular virus, but many of them (i.e. HIV) cannot stay active outside a host. I believe you have a greater probability of getting hit by lightening 10 times this week than picking up H1N1 from a coin surface.

sil, an earlier H1N1 influenza outbreak that started in late January 1918 and lasted for almost two years killed perhaps 75 million - that's MILLION - people. Granted, that was a few years before we discovered that influenza was caused by a virus and not bacteria, and since then modern sanitation methods and medicines have greatly decreased the chance that we'd ever see anything close to that number of deaths by the flu, but I take the threat seriously. 13,000 or so people die per year from "ordinary" flu in the USA.

Having said that, I haven't had a flu shot since 1978. I had the flu right after receiving a flu shot in 1978. I haven't had the flu since 1978, either. I take the flu seriously, but not the flu shot. I also don't jaywalk nor play golf during thunderstorms nor tease rabid animals, but I do stay away from coughing and sneezing people - not an easy task in a high school classroom!

I am the antithesis of that. The one time I did not get a flu shot (1995) I got the sickest I had ever been! I have not had the flu any other time. But my wife never gets a flu shot and only has sinus problems every year. Go figure.

The metal of coins is not a great carrier of anything. However, as dirt builds up on them, they do create an ability to harbor those little germs, viruses, bacteriums. But if you really want to see those little things, check out your paper currency under a microscope. One look and you'll never use paper currency again.
And here is something to ponder. Ever hear of a real Vegetarian? Show them a piece of Lettuse under a microscope and ask if they have been eating those little things walking all over the Lettuse.
And on a report recently it was discovered the number one ranking place to find possible illnesses is on the handle of a shopping cart.

Ehh.. Swine Flu's a major hype.
Once the vaccines are out and people fork out millions upon millions to the pharmaceutical company. The "epidemic" will suddenly disappear. Its a conspiracy.

Its a reality.

There are even several generations of antibiotics and some desease resistance to antibiotics lik MRSA as far as I konw.

And some deseases are already in the system of humans but will only comes out and have symptoms if the resistance of and individual is at its lowest just an opinion.

Swine flu, bird flu to human back and forth just a comment.

medication is always expensive, expensive tuition only rich can afford to go to universities only few will graduate and finish the course. healt care isn't it that is the problem even in the developed countries .

Expensive medical insurance, low supply in drugs if not expensive, crossing border medical tourism most of the time medicine is expensive just an opinion.
