Swine flu is no more severe than the regular flu and I'm sure that has never stopped you right? There is a lot of hype over this flu but I think you are pretty safe to be honest unless you have some type of pre-existing medical condition (which would also make regular flu dangerous to you)

If you are really worried gloves are always an option.

Then again, don't dig through a pile of coins and then stick your fingers in your mouth and that will help cut down the risks too! :)

I wondered about that myself. But that change is going to wind up in a cash register somewhere and end up in circulation anyhow. Eventually end up coming in contact with a coin that may end up in my possession. Heck, I could already have a coin that came in contact with swine flu in my safe!

For the most part coins are made from metals that do not promote bacteria growth. It was better when they used silver as silver kills most germs. (Romans used it to purify water) but even the Nickel coins of today provide some protection.

Oh geez, no offense meant but if this was my biggest worry I'd be tickled to death. Really now, did you worry about bird flu last year? What happened to that "pandemic". It's always something and you can't live your life in fear of whatever big scare the, ahem, experts are gonna throw at you next. Do you know anyone who has swine flu? Are there any cases near you? Why worry about something that more than likely is never going to affect you in the least no matter what the talking heads on the telly say. Overpopulation, pollution, the economy, the ever expanding national debt, how much the old lady racked up in credit card bills this weekend, there is a never ending list of things to spend time worrying about. Anymore the people in charge of the news have cried wolf too much to be taken seriously as far as I'm concerned.

Are you saying if I rub say a bar of silver over my hands, I would be cleaning them in some sort?

Before the advent of antibiotics silver was commonly used for medicinal purposes.

As long as you keep the coins out of your mouth, it should not be a problem.

Just wash your hands with any antibiotic soap after touching anything that you suspect, and as several have indicated, keep your hands away from your face while sorting coins. Luckily, coins don't sneeze, so you probably have little if any possibility of contracting any airborne disease from coins - which, frankly, are filthy.

1918 and the quarter and half eagle? I would not really worry that much about the swine flu via coins. It more likely you could get it at a any place where large amounts of people touch or are confined in one area. (gas pump, doors into a building, escalators, etc). The way it looks right now the swine flu is just like the seasonal flu, but you never know part II could be even worse like in 1918. It just really depends on how the mutations go over the summer

Anyone remember a few months back the program that showed scientist have discovered that copper is a powerful bacteria killer. It seems copper stops bacteria from being able to reproduce. The amazing thing is that it even kills the MRSA strain of staph that is killing so many people in hospitals!

Hospitals are now undergoing test trials using copper toilet seats, door handles, push-plates etc with a dramatic reduction in their infection rates.

Just do a quick google and you'll find lots of info on it.

So it seems all those penny rolls we buy and search through are pretty much germ free!

Swine flu, Swine flu, Swine flu!

3 weeks ago it was the main news story every night over here, and we were all going to die. Then someone leaked information on what MPs (Members of Parliament) were claiming for on their expenses and we haven't heard another word about swine flu since!

I am sure it hasn't disappeared but suddenly no one is talking about it. Makes you wonder just how big of a threat it really is doesn't it?

Mainly be carefull of any coins or currency with a flu warning on them. Also, be cautious of any coins with pigs on them. And if you do store your coins in your mouth, don't swallow.
Naturally kidding. Most non pourus materials are poor germ, bacteria, virus carriers. If your going to worry about money being contaminated, then too think about the many people over the years that have handled the same money you do and they don't wash their hands after using a washroom, pick their noses, spit on their hands and many other non mentionable things. Then of course there are those that have AIDS, mumps, typhoid and many, many other things like that and also have handled your money.
Your probably a lot worse off touching the shopping cart handles at a store.
