Hi, I have a 1697 3 Kreuzer from the Principality of Transylvania. I haven't seen any with a 1697 date, only 1696 such as this one:

I'm wondering if it could be a counterfeit?

Hmmm, curious issue. From the surfaces - or just the left side of the obverse legend - that HAS to be cast.

Curiously, though, a lot of the 1696s seem to come from awful dies, rusted/broken. Browse through some of these (the search caught a few unrelated pieces... scan through to see the pertinent examples):

I noticed that too and I thought it was due to the roller die process how it was made, since I've noticed this issue with other kreuzers.

Seems to be a known, though scarce year: https://www.numisbids.com/sale/4669/lot/?lot=394

Can you detect any curvature to your coin? That would help tie it to the roller mill pocess, and make a cast copy less likely. This is an example of what I'm talking about:

Thanks! That link you sent is helpful as it is similar to my coin - the obverse legend is weirdly stretched.

There is curvature on the left side of the coin (same area where the obverse legend / letters are stretched). It's like someone took a rolling pin to it and rolled it but didn't do it all the way. I couldn't get a great picture but you can see it from my pic above where half of the coin is slightly raised vs the other half.
