Was at the pawn shop today looking at coins (I was wanting a 1888 or 89 Morgan) asked them to pull one out that was labeled a 89. They handed it to me, nothing unusual, I go there at least once a week. I moved the price tag to look at it and it was a 1903, I thought, ok they mislabeled it - it happens. So I flipped it over and it was a cc. One thing I did notice was that the price tag marker was ripped but I didn't think anything of it. So I told the guys, hey this coin is mislabeled and worth probably about $900 as it's a cc. I asked them if they could weigh it and confirm it's silver content (it felt light) because I would still like to know what they would sell it for, they basically ignored me took the coin put it on the scale (4 grams short) and went straight to the cameras. Came back and said it happened a few days before with a troublesome customer who swapped out a coin when they weren't looking. Anyway first time this ever happened to me, and surprised I could feel a difference in the weight. I do have to say, yes I know it's a pawn shop but they are very knowledgeable about coins and I have been going there for about 5 years. They won't buy a coin that isn't weighed and metal content tested, so I believe they were the victim of a swap out. Anyway I left with a 1904 O, I will post this evening. Has this happened to else?

Interesting story... I just visited a pawn store a few days ago and among the genuine coins, I spotted at least five counterfeit Morgan dollars. Of course I let the owner know that there is a good probability of these coins are fake, as I saw details that didn't match genuine coins. One was even an 1895-S Morgan better date that was a glaring counterfeit as the reverse was fully clashed, which is never a feature on real Morgan's. I let him know that there are some counterfeits that are magnetic, others like these five were not magnetic. Two of the fakes seemed a bit underweight which was a red flag, and even he agreed with me. So he is planning to take these suspected counterfeits to another dealer to check for silver content.

Wow that's really scary honestly especially that a pawn shop isn't testing coins, that's cool you pointed it out to them. Makes you wonder if the scammers know which shops don't test anything, Chances are they do. It really flustered me for a minute because I instantly wondered if they thought I was trying to rip them off, luckily I'm a "regular".

Seems like if they were knowledgeable about coins they would realize that by 1903 the Carson City mint hadn't made coins in 10 years!
