am I correct in assuming that die cracks will be raised above the face of the coin? is there a proper way to clean questionable coins to not take away from potential damage? t.i.a.

There is no real way to 'clean' a coin and not diminish any possible value.
A water rinse with NO Rubbing
An acetone soak might remove organic material. there are other way to 'Conserve' a coin, but cleaning as a general rule is a Huge No, No.

and yes to your other question - die cracks will be raised.

Yes, would love to see full, large and sharp photos of the obverse and reverse.

Dearborn said it well. Cleaning in general is a big no. Only use pure acetone and Verdi-Care.
