Dave - Did you notice any really BIG boulders in the area? Maybe on the order of about 5 or 6 feet cubed? If so, did any have a hollowed out area on the front side? If so, you might have been looking at an ancient dishwasher for cleaning these stone/pottery dishes! I'm going to go with 7777 BP. (Thanks for the very unique and very cool contest!)
