I just got the new issue of Coinage Magazine (April Edition). There is an interesting article that mentions a commemorative Franklin cent to coincide with the regular Lincoln Cent. Here are some exerps.

"Congress to recommend circulating commemorative coinage of all denominations, one per year, starting with a Franklin cent in 2006 that would circulate beside its Lincoln counterpart."

"The CCAC also had proposed 500,000 non-circulating legal-tender half dollars honoring Franklin, a founding father who signed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution and whose legacy was previously honored on the Franklin half dollar from 1948-1963."

All this starts on page 44 if you wanna read more.

nds76,
I have read in multiple venues about proposed changes to the Lincoln Cent to celebrate the bicentennial of his birth. The original Lincoln Wheat cent was the centennial celebration of his birth. The 1959 memorial reverse was the sesquicentennial (150th year) tribute. The portrait although tinkered with on the obverse remained almost the same for what will be 100 years in 2009. What a run this coin has had! I have read that that there will be multiple reverses but what are the plans for the obverse and are the reverses a one-year only change or spread out over several year’s? The Mint has really caught on with capturing the public’s attention to its coinage and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon! Maybe if they had been this creative in the early days they wouldn’t have had such trouble getting the minting operation off the ground floor! The profit has been enormous, and it’s been a great deal of fun for the hobby. Mike

I have heard 4 different designs in 2009 and the composition is supposed to be the same as the 1909 cent.

The Franklin cent would be a commemorative and also there is to be a proposed commemorative design for each denomination. Should be interesting!

I think I will wait until we get a little closer to the date. A lot of these congresspeople won't even be in office when it's time to vote.

I really don't understand why people are getting so excited about the 200th birthday of Lincoln...

I feel 200 years old every time I get up in the morning and I was born the sakme day. No one gets excited about me..?
