The train in question is of course the distinctive M-10000 Streamliner which was taken on a round-the-country tour in 1934, as well as exhibited at the Chicago World's Fair. In an era when most trains were still steam-powered and airships were seen as state-of-the-art transportation, this train was futuristic - the 1930s equivalent of the Concorde jet.
The medals are the only surviving relic of the train. By 1942, the train was worn-out and scrapped to help supply aluminium for the war aircraft industry.
