While checking 1982-D pennies for the small date, 3.1 gram transitional variety, I found this coin with the right weight, but it's too well-circulated / smushed to match the reference image. I can't seem to find its composition because every search results in being told that all 1982-D Large Date varietals weigh 2.5 grams. Any help would be appreciated &🙏;;#127996;

Not all 1982D large dates weigh 2.5g, they can also weigh 3.11g as there were hundreds of millions minted.

Yes, and based on everyone's responses, I obviously chose my words poorly which resulted in my question being lost.

I apologize.

What I was trying to ask about is its composition. I'm having trouble finding out via Google, because every site I'm referred to says that due to the transitional error, the SMALL DATE variety will weigh 2.5 grams if it's zinc or 3.1 grams if it's copper/bronze, but they only reference the 2.5 gram weight for the LARGE DATE variety.

I know for sure this coin's weight is just shy of that 3.1 gram mark, so I know it can't be zinc. But by the same token, I'm not comfortable specifying its composition as copper or bronze based solely on an assumption that I can't back up.

You have your information backwards.
As I stated earlier, the 1982D large date cent was made in both
copper coated zinc and copper so it can weigh either 2.5g or 3.11g.
No difference in value. It is the 1982D SMALL DATE that was only
2.5g copper coated zinc. ( except for a couple struck in copper by mistake)

It's unfortunately one of the sites I was referring to that only discuss the large date variety that weighs 2.5 grams, but it's definitely a great link, thank you for suggesting it

That's why I'm confused by my inability to find any reference to the 3.1 gram large date. It seems like it *has* to have the same composition as the 3.1 gram small date, right? I was hoping someone here would know for sure either way, but had the same trouble getting confirmation about whether or not a different coin is a proof. Like every other newcomer, I'm still in the adjustment phase so both answers AND non-answers are helpful tools for learning to realistically manage my expectations. There's so much knowledge and terrific information here, a lot of us probably arrive unrealistically imagining these forums as some sort of specialized version of a Magic 8 ball, lol

Boy, that's really frustrating to hear because reading comprehension is not something I tend have an issue with, and puzzling due to the amount of sources I consulted. Which, in hind sight, might've been the issue...
Thank you VERY much for the correction. I'm going to take it as a sign that I'm probably getting ahead of myself and need to slow down.

That's exactly what I wanted to know (and apparently wasted way too much time on by unnecessarily complicating it, LOL). Thank you!!!
