Hey folks,

First time poster / forum user!

I found a 1960-D Lincoln Cent (Small Date) with a really unusual raised square shape on the upper curl of the "9" in the date. It's clearly raised, not recessed, and the shape is sharp and geometric — which doesn't look like your typical random die chip.

- It's not listed in known varieties like on CopperCoins or Wexler's site
- Doesn't appear to be post-mint damage
- Looks like it may be a retained die break or a unique chip

Has anyone seen this before? I've attached close-up images under magnification.
Appreciate any insights!

It's part of the design, normal for the small date.

Thank you! I haven't looked into 60's coins much and I saw that immediately. Thank you for clearing that up for me with the reference link! I'm a little embarrassed not knowing that haha.

No need to be embarrassed, if you don't know you don't know. You are not the first to ask about that particular thing and will not be the last. You can learn so much just by perusing the different threads that are started here. Never be afraid to ask any question.

I agree with @ makecents - It is the normal for this variety cent. And it is far better to as a question about something than it is to wonder about it.

It is not a variety, just the normal design for the small date.
