I've had a hard time getting a photo of this 1914 D Lincoln Cent that looks like the coin. The lighting was a little tricky, and hopefully I will learn some of the ins and out of coin photography when I go to the ANA seminar in Colorado in June. The legend on this coin is clearly visible, as is the date, but the 4 in the date is weak. It's a nice brown, which photo # 3 doesn't really show. Can I please get feedback on which photo is best? #1 #2 #3 #4 #5 Edited by TonysPics 05/28/2009 4:11 pm

#4 seems best. It shows as much contrast as possible on the coin, displays true color and the date is identifiable. I would include a blow-up of any important items, i.e., date, dings/flaws, double strikes, evidence of die breaks, etc. Love the PICS!!

Until I "Biggie-Sized" my screen to 200% I couldn't really tell that the last digit was a 4...but yeah...photo number 4 is best.

#2 or #4. Getting photos just right is really tricky for non pros like myself. I use a cheap Nikon Cool Pix camera. I put on Flower setting. I place the coin on a clean white sock on a nicely sunlit window sill and vary the angle and distance from the coin. Out of 3 shots, 1 is usually pretty good.

JayDon62 and any others interested in digital photography of coins: Did you know that the Forum has a section in here dedicated to coin photography? There is a long but SUPER thread on this subject by SuperDave at this link: https://goccf.com/t/29441
