Having-Trouble-On-This-1878-CC-Quarter

The real patina on the obverse is a bit darker and the 'spot' to the right of the head seems to be a little bit of 'dark red' junk. Also, the darkest areas of the patina seem to be more 'substanc-y' than the rest of the patina. Is this normal and accepted for darker toned coins and am I overreacting? Or does the coin have environmental damage....

I will send it back if it does, but on first glance, it looks fine. I'm not too familiar with the term 'environmental damage' but this at least was enough to raise my eyebrows. If it's problem free I got a great deal, but I have to pay for this layaway...so even if I got what I paid for (which I did if it has problems) I'd rather send it back, lol.

Anyway, some advice please?

It's a bit difficult to say because of the dark color, but from what I can make out the details look to be EF-40.

I pegged it at EF-40 as well. I'm just looking for a more detailed description of what constitutes 'environmental damage' and some experiences with it, as well as much 'darker' toned coins.

Looks like it was photographed through the 2X2 plastic which doesn't help, but the surfaces appear micro-porous in these images. I suspect it has light corrosion from some kind of environmental exposure and therefore should be valued lower than a no-problem example. In terms of wear it does look like an EF-40.

If you decide to go for it please post some new pictures after you get it; maybe it looks better in-hand.

Yeah its definitely not micro-porous, just...dark. I'll try to get some bigger pictures.

Eh, I think I'll send it back. $125 is a bit too much for a coin I'm uneasy about. It doesn't look that bad, it just feels like something isn't quite right.
