Hi

I picked this up today from my stepdad.
Coin is genuine and may grade only VG8 maybe VG10 (will post later at grading forum) Most of Motto (rev.) is readable in hand as well as some of Liberty (obv.)Pics. are scans and are off color a bit as well
as not very sharp. Anyway, I weighed the coin on my gem scale and it
weighs in at 12.2/12.3 grams. The normal weight for an unc. is 12.5
I was reading up on this and noticed that the 1873/1874's were a little heavier than the earlier date halfs because they added the arrows etc. next to the date. Normal weight for the earlier dates was
12.44 grams. Then I saw a reference that stated some of the earlier
planchets were used on the 1873/1874's. Is this true ? And if so and
figuring in the weight of this worn coin (wear and tear deduction from
the normal minted weight) Could this coin be an earlier planchet and
would that make it a variety or error ? Add any more value to the coin ?
Thanks for any input.

I think the weight difference between the "with arrows" type (12.50 grams) and the "no arrows" type that preceded it (12.44 grams) is within the tolerance for normal weight variations of the original planchet. Your coin weighing in at 12.2 - 12.3 grams would be normal for either type that was worn down to VG-08. I don't see any way to positively determine whether a particular coin was struck using a 12.50 or 12.44-gram planchet.

As far as varieties are concerned, the style of the CC mintmark might be important. I have an 1876-CC half which has the "small, rounded" version of the CC mintmark (one of three different styles that were used for that year). Your 1874 coin appears to have a very similar reverse with the small mintmark. It's almost a match, although the mintmark on your coin appears to be a little closer to the branch on the right side. Here's a photo of the reverse of my 1876-CC. Looks pretty close, no?

Hi

Thanks for the info. I guess it would be tough to prove
an earlier planchet use on this. I guess the wear could account
for the lighter weight. I reweighed it a few more times and it is
coming up 12.1/12.2 now. I was not aware of any die varieties for this year/MM coin. The CC on mine seems larger as well as spaced
furthur apart and the right C is higher up as well as slanted compared to yours. That's a nice coin by the way. I guess I would have
to see a few pics. of a normal 74 to get a better idea on things.
These type coins are new to me really. Would you or maybe someone
have a link to any die varieties/etc. on these coins ?
I know it's not a great grade coin but maybe a little extra something
may be worthwhile looking into furthur.
