Just wondering, would I, as an individual, be able to commission my own coins? How do companies, such as Downies, go about getting their own products (well I think they do)? Or something like the Royal Society of Victoria being able to have 500 of those Antarctic Explorer silver coins gold plated?
Can I take one of my silver coins from my collection and have it gold plated?
Maybe you just need a lot of money.. :)

They gold plate auto and motorcycle parts...why not your coins?
Do know why you would want to, but I think you can.

Yes, most companies that do chrome plating also do other type of metal plating, polishing etc.

What endless is talking about isn't "home-made" plating, but a job done by the Mint itself. It's an Australian thing.

Generally, the RAM doesn't do "special orders" for the privileged few individuals. Occasionally, they will produce a special product for certain associations they deem to be worthy (such as ANDA or the Royal Society of Victoria) or choose to select a sole distributor for a certain product (such as the Commonwealth Bank or Downies). I don't know if the company or organization in question pays for this privilege.

The Mint won't plate for you a coin in your collection that they've already sold to you. If you want one of your own coins plated, you'll have to get it done unofficially... and I should also point out that in Australia, doing so is illegal.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Well... I am certainly not worthy enough to even approach the Mint! And of course to just go and do it myself would be defacing or vandalising; not a good idea, and then it would be illegal to sell them as well (the whole idea was to have a very limited mintage of something and therefore people would pay a pretty price for it) .
