Bought this as a bronze ancient greek coin but it's pretty heavy (2.97g) and gold colored with some tarnishing. Could this be electrum?

@cis, first welcome to CCF. Second, that surface pitting suggest to me that the metal might be copper-based rather than a gold/silver alloy. However, knowing the specific density would be a great way to confirm. Any chance of you performing this non-destructive test and then posting the results to this thread? Thx.

Thanks for the reply! Sure I can try the test. How do I do it?

Ok I think the density is 7.81. Divided the weight of the coin (2.97g) by the weight suspended in water (0.38). Hope I did that right!

7.81 is way too low to be anything containing a significant amount of either gold or silver. It's a typical density for brass, or perhaps even iron. The pitting and corrosion are also evidence that it is not actually made of gold or silver.

I'm not seeing much actual design stamped on this item. It might be an ancient weight, rather than a coin.

This was my first thought.
