Hi everyone, I have been busy traveling around. I have been sending some coins off for trade and found this 2001 50 cents by chance as I have been hoarding all commemorative coins I could find - Centenary of Federation (not those state coins). I was about to sent this out if I was any sleepier.

Anyways, this is the coin and I think it looks amazingly clear to me that this is a doubling:

Anyone come across anything like this? I don't remember seeing any similar examples.

Cheers

It appears to be a doubled die to me too There is clear separation of the serifs.
A friend sent me a coin recently with doubling in the same position, although less dramatic than yours.

I guess doubling isn't a popular error?

Doubling errors seem to be much more popular in the US than they are here. I don't usually bother about them unless they are pretty spectacular, like the 2007 50¢ reverses where the die was still used, even though it appeared to be worn out. On many of these, the bottom half of the coin, particularly the 50 is ridiculous!

I'm also a hoarder of the fat 'Millennium' 50,s, also called Candleabra I's.

Quite a few $1 coins have the Q's nose doubled.

Quite a lot of the Fed 50's are doubled, on one side or both (ditto for state coins). The most significant would be the "Fat 5", but I seem to recall I found around 30 different types of errors on this coin, with multiple examples of each.

I do keep doubling errors, but it seems very few others do. Perhaps because they're so common? :(
